I posted the following comment to your earlier post on your other blog. I just wanted to contribute it to the more active conversation here.

I think there are some educational benefits to using Twitter. For instance, limiting some tweets to 140 characters requires a great deal of summarizing (even synthesizing, on occasion) on my part. Often times it’s more difficult to write less. Brevity is an acquired skill for many.

I agree that networking is vital. I’m not interested in following everyone. I quit following those that tweet about things that not of interest to me. Thus, you can easily make your Twitter experience whatever you want it to be.

I've used Twitter in my HS science classroom. It worked, but not to the same extent as it does with educators. I think we had the same problem that a lot of new Twitter users have, myself included, no network. A class of students that are in constant contact with one another during the day do not make for an active Twitterverse. It takes a little time to build up a good network on Twitter, and without that network Twitter is no better then instant messaging between friends. I can see Twitter being used as a collaboration tool between distant classrooms, but like everything else it is the teachers work before the project goes 'live' that pays dividends.

Stephen Downes, in his slideshare presentation on the difference between groups and networks, may disagree with you on the exclusion of students, but only in principle. Twitter is a network. Networks are open. I think student participation about learning ) should be encouraged. If it is about learning, they should have a voice. If a network is twittering about what they are having for dinner or something that may be inappropriate, use facebook.
No, I don't use twitter. Yes, I expect to be smitten by my comment! :)

You may want to explore Pownce as well. It's like Twitter. I don't find it has the same ed community as twitter, but you can group users differently. I heard a while back that Kelly Christopherson (@kwhobbes) was thinking about using it with his staff because of the grouping abilities. Might have some possibilities.
